Leonbergers are large dogs used mainly as companions. They were bred to resemble the town crest lion of Leonberg in Germany. The breed experienced ups and downs in the course of history, namely during World Wars, when it was hard to feed large dogs. Nowadays, the breed is relatively rare. Yet, the Leonberger is gaining in popularity.

The Leonberger is a large dog weighing from 130 to 170 pounds. The dog usually stands for about 29-31 inches. Females are usually smaller. Respective sizes for a female Leonberger are 100-130 pounds and 27-29 inches.

The Leonberger has a mane that makes the dog resemble the lion. Males fully develop a mane by the age of four years. The mane in females is less conspicuous. One of the distinctive features of the breed is webbed feet. Webbed feet enable the Leonberger to swim well.

The coat is dense and close fitting. Though the coat should be straight, slight wave is permitted. Leonbergers come in yellow, red, reddish brown, and all combinations of in between. These dogs have a black mask on the face.

Leonbergers - Suited for All Owners?

Despite the fact that the Leonberger dog is very large, it has sweet personality and is good with children. The dog is affectionate and stable. Leonbergers are said to be amazingly intelligent. They are suited for families with other pets due to their loyal disposition. Leonbergers should be socialized early. Since this is a large breed, all owners are advised to obedience train the dogs.

Leonbergers - Living Conditions

As a rule, the Leonberger dog is more active than other large breeds. The dog is relatively inactive indoors, yet prefers spending a day outside. It is recommended to provide a dog with a large yard. Leonbergers do not need a lot of exercise. These dogs are prone to bone problems. Hence, high jumps should be avoided during play especially at an early age. Leonbergers are excellent swimmers and enjoy being around water.
