Breeders of Leonbergers should carefully plan their breeding program to produce high quality dogs. Like all large breeds, the Leonberger is prone to bone disorders. The Leonberger has a large litter. The litter size averages 8 puppies. However, some litters can be as large as 18 puppies. Needless to say, puppies need a lot of care and attention. As puppies, Leonbergers should not be exposed to high jumps since this can damage their bones easily.
