Leonbergers - History
Leonbergers appeared in Germany in 1846 thanks to the efforts of Heinrich Essing, a great dog lover. He realized his dream to create a dog that would resemble the lion on the crest of the city of Leonberger. His efforts were a success. The Leonberger is noted for its mane and close resemblance to the lion.
To breed the Leonberger, Heinrich Essing crossed the Newfoundland, St. Bernard, and the Great Pyrenees. All these breeds contributed greatly to the dog's appearance and physical and temperament qualities. In this time or another, the Leonberger was used as a livestock guardian and for obedience and tracking. The Germans made use of the dog's liking for water and ability to swim well. The Leonberger is often used as a water-rescue dog.
Nowadays, the population of the Leonberger is not great. However, it is gaining in numbers. The breed was damaged considerably during the two world wars. As a matter of fact, all large breeds underwent decline due to the wars. Hardships of the war did not allow owners to feed dogs that needed substantial amount of food. However, thanks to a few breed enthusiasts, the Leonberger population was reestablished after the World War II. The breed standard for Leonbergers appeared in 1949.
